KIEPE Austria: New Train Control System for the U6 Line

Together with Siemens, 144 vehicles of types T, T1, and T1-3, which are in operation on the U6 line of Wiener Linien, will be equipped with a new point-based train control system.

KIEPE Electric's Austrian branch is responsible for the installation and assembly, as well as the necessary hardware adaptations on the vehicles.

At the same time, the vehicle control system will be modified to provide the driving staff with a driver assistance system in the future. This system optimizes driving behavior during acceleration and braking phases and ensures precise stops at the stations.

The conversion of all vehicles will take place at the Wiener Linien facilities.

The U6 trains are always operated in four-car formations. By mid-May, half of the vehicles will have been converted. This will allow the newly equipped vehicles to be placed at the train ends, while the "old" vehicles will be positioned in the middle, in time for the planned launch of the new track equipment at the beginning of July 2025.

As part of the modernization, eight auxiliary vehicles will also be equipped with the new train control system.
