Electrical systems for the tram of the future

In summer 2019, Leipziger Straßenbahn, Verkehrsbetriebe Zwickau and Verkehrsbetriebe Görlitz launched the "Saxon Platform - Tram of the Future" project. The aim of this project is to purchase up to 181 modern tram vehicles that can be adapted to the different requirements of passengers and transport companies. The initiative aims to shape a climate-friendly transport transition in the municipalities and to overcome the associated challenges together.

LEIWAG, a consortium consisting of KIEPE Electric GmbH and HeiterBlick GmbH, was awarded the contract as a tram supplier. While Heiterblick is responsible for the mechanical part and the assembly, we are responsible for the electrical systems from the drive to the auxiliary units. KIEPE and HeiterBlick are developing 25 45-metre vehicles for Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe alone as part of the supply contract, with the option of adding up to 130 of the 2.40-metre-wide trams. The joint procurement programme of the three transport companies extends until 2030 and, in addition to the vehicles, also includes the development costs and spare parts packages.
